CRICKET: Burton (6-10) sets up Sutton’s nine-wicket win

Long Sutton 1st (89-1) beat Woodhall Spa 2nd (88) by nine wickets: Long Sutton continued their impressive start to the season with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Woodhall Spa in South Lincs and Border League Premier Division.

Winning the toss in warm, overcast conditions, Sutton skipper Phil Barnes had no hesitation in asking the opposition to bat first.

It looked a good decision when Barry Stanway removed the dangerous Rob Bee without really troubling the scores. Tom Casswell (22) and Jean Pierre Prinsloo (21) got Woodhall back on track, but when Casswell was smartly caught in the slips off the bowling of Rob Simpson, Sutton were back on top.

On the back of his five-wicket haul last weekend, Jake Burton was introduced in to the attack and quickly settled into his rhythm. Bowling with cunning and guile, he picked up wickets at regular intervals whilst conceding very few runs.

Ably supported by Simpson and Dan Oldfield at the other end, Sutton piled the pressure on Woodhall and dismissed them for just 88, with Burton taking an incredible 6-10 from 9.1 overs.

Sutton’s openers set about the task of chasing down the below par total in positive fashion.

Barnes (32no) rotated the strike well whilst Jamie Taylor (36) played in his usual swashbuckling manner, hitting a huge six on to Park Road. Taylor fell to Woodhall skipper Paul Jackson, with ten runs still needed.

Dan Oldfield strolled out to the middle and alongside his skipper, saw Sutton home to make it three wins from four games so far this season.
