Potent pair Lockie and Butland steer young Tulips to deserved league crown

Unstoppable Spalding United under-18s clinched the Peterborough and District Youth League Division Two title with a 3-0 win at Glinton and Northborough Black under-18s on Sunday.

Goals from talented duo Levi Butland (2) and Jonny Lockie were enough for the unbeaten Tulips to seal their 18th win from 19 league games and wrap up the title with three matches to spare.

Having made hard work of beating the same opposition 4-2 in their last game, the Tulips knew it wouldn’t be easy for them to seal the championship at the first time of asking.

It proved to be a feisty first half, but goals from Butland and Lockie – the latter netting his 30th of the campaign – calmed any nerves.

Spalding’s Robbie Thurston also hit the bar with a header from a well-placed free kick from Declan Earth, while at the other end Craig Fiske, Elliotte Walton, Jake Scampion and Thurston looked very strong.

It was game over on the hour, with Butland’s 22nd of the season putting the young Tulips 3-0 to the good.

With skipper Sam Young producing a man-of-the-match performance, his side held firm to see out the rest of the game and life the league title.

Spalding’s coaching staff of Chris Maplethorpe, Steve Lane and Fabio Vicente were all very proud of the side – and now hope that they can finish the season with an unbeaten record.

Next up for the all-conquering Tulips – who have bagged 104 goals in the league – is a trip to Crowland juniors on Sunday, May 1 (10.30am).

They then have further away dates at Ketton (May 8) and Wisbech Town Acorns (May 15).
