Spalding RFC stun title hopefuls Ashbourne to climb out of relegation zone

Spalding RFC jumped out of the drop zone as they produced a potentially season-saving performance to beat title-chasing Ashbourne 26-19 at the Memorial Field on Saturday.

Skipper Sam Cooke had warned his side that they’d need to take point from all three of their remaining Midlands Two East (North) fixtures to stand a chance of staying up – and the Elephants duly delivered in front of their own fans.

With rivals Mansfield beaten 48-21 at Market Bosworth, Town are now three points clear of the drop zone and could secure survival with a victory at rock-bottom Bakewell Mannerians next weekend.

Bakwell were drubbed 76-5 at Southwell and have only won once all season, meaning Spalding will be hot favourites to take the points.

Mansfield host seventh-placed Melbourne next, however, meaning the race for survival could go to the final day,

More to follow.

RESULTS

Midlands Two East (N): Market Bosworth 48 Mansfield 21; Melbourne 18 Dronfield 29; Nottingham Casuals 34 Coalville 24; Southwell 76 Bakewell Mannerians 5; Spalding 26 Ashbourne 19; Stamford 27 West Bridgford 27.
