LETTER: One more example of indecency

Having spent 25 years reporting on and working with politicians at all levels and of every political persuasion, I have observed that most MPs are more preoccupied with power, money and privilege and doing the best for themselves rather than their constituents.

So it should come as no surprise that John Hayes has pocketed £1m from playing the property market at our expense. Or that he should have the bare-faced cheek to claim over £4,000 to support his sons’ jollies in London.

This is yet one more example of the indecency of the Westminster gravy-train and the breath-taking arrogance of a man who will, apparently without conscience, leech off some of the country’s lowest wage earners whom he purports to represent.

No doubt Mr Hayes won’t be shamed into repaying the money, taking refuge in ludicrous parliamentary rules that condone this sort of blatant profiteering off the backs of hard-pressed taxpayers.

But, then, why should he worry about what the voters of South Holland and the Deepings think? No doubt he knows he will soon be pensioned-off to that other ermine-lined palace of privilege as Lord Hayes of Moulton.
