Former favourite McGovern strikes as Lincoln United sink Spalding United

An early goal from Jack McGovern sentenced Spalding United to a 1-0 Evo-Stik League First Division South defeat at Lincoln United on Boxing Day.

The ex-Spalding midfielder headed home to only goal of the game from a corner on six minutes, as the Tulips slipped to a third defeat on the spin.

Marcus Ebdon’s side were unlucky not to equalise before half time as left back Adam Jackson rattled the bar with a superb long-range strike from Adam Jackson.

However, the Tulips struggled to create opportunities after the break and had keeper Michael Duggan to thank for keeping the score at 1-0. He tipped a Gary King effort over to deny Lincoln a second.

Mitch Griffiths played 55 minutes for Lincoln, having joined from Spalding on Christmas Eve.

The Tulips are back in action on Monday, as they welcome Gresley to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field (3pm).

Tulips: Duggan, Humble (Sanders), Jackson, Spafford, Stainfield, Banister, Walker, Lawlor, Waumsley (Fife), Graham, Lee (Lockie). Not used: Hussey.

  • Holbeach United’s ChromaSport UCL Premier Division game at Wisbech Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The Tigers host Yaxley on Monday (3pm).
