South Holland Singers upcoming concert

South Holland Singers’ upcoming concert will feature four young professional soloists.

The show takes place in St Mary and St Nicolas Church, Spalding, on Saturday.

Conducted by Robin Carter, it will contain two works – Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum and Haydn’s Imperial Nelson Mass – which have a similarity and a connecting theme in that they both commemorate victories over the French at different times of the 18th century.

To celebrate victory of the combined Austrian and British armies over the French on June 27, 1743 at Dettingen, Handel composed a festive Te Deum and the anthem The King Shall Rejoice (this will be included in a concert in May next year).

This festive Te Deum is not primarily religious or liturgical, but is a ceremonial work where trumpet fanfares influence the whole work and give it an air of festive grandeur.

Haydn’s Imperial Nelson Mass may have attained it’s name some time after it’s first performance in 1798, as the trumpet fanfares, particularly in the Benedictus, would have seemed celebratory following the news of Nelson’s routing of the Napoleonic fleet at the Battle of the Nile on August 1, 1798.

For this concert the South Holland Singers will be joined by four young professional soloists and the performance will be to organ accompaniment played by David Shepherd, the choir’s regular accompanist.

The concert will start at 7.30pm. Tickets purchased in advance are £10, or alternatively £12 if purchased at the door on the day of the concert.

Full time students have free entry.

Tickets are available from Bookmark, The Crescent, Spalding, from choir members or by calling 01775 760757.
