Local Democracy Week: ‘Being a councillor is satisfying, if frustrating’

Even after almost 40 years on South Holland District Council, Bryan Alcock still gets the same satisfaction out of a being a member – coupled with a dose of frustration.

The satisfaction comes from achieving results; the frustration from the often protracted time in getting them.
Strategy is his favourite part of the role, rather than the day-to-day tasks.

One of three Crowland and Deeping St Nicholas members and an ever-present on the planning committee, Coun Alcock (76) has always been an Independent.

He said: “We obviously all vote in national elections so it’s not as though we have no political interest. I just feel that I don’t want to be steered in the direction of national policy. In the end analysis, there are national policies and you have to roll with them, but I want to form my own opinion.”

And to potential future councillors, Coun Alcock had a word of warning about the commitment: “It makes good inroads into your family life!”
