Late penalty leaves Holbeach United stunned on opening day at Desborough

A last-gasp penalty handed Holbeach United a gut-wrenching 1-0 defeat at Desborough Town on the opening day of the UCL Premier Division season on Saturday.

Tipped to be among the title favourites, Darren Jarvis’ Tigers were expected to win comfortably at Waterworks Field.

But it wasn’t to be, with Jake Bettles burying a spot-kick in the 90th minute to leave Jarvis still searching for a first away win as Holbeach boss.

The Tigers host Sleaford Town, who beat Cogenhoe United 4-2, in their next game on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

In the ChromaSport Peterborough League Premier Division, Jordan Keeble fired a hat-trick as Holbeach United Reserves cruised to a 5-2 win over Stilton United at Carter’s Park.

Paul Newcombe also bagged from the penalty spot, while an own goal completed the scoring.

Elsewhere in the top tier, Pinchbeck United picked up a solid 2-2 draw with Netherton United at Knight Street.

In Division One, Spalding United Reserves were beaten 3-1 at home by Oundle Town, while Long Sutton Athletic claimed a 1-1 home draw with Stamford Belvedere and Moulton Harrox Reserves lost 2-0 at Whittlesey Reserves.

On Friday night, Moulton Harrox shared the Jack Hogg Charity Shield with Whittlesey Athletic after a 1-1 draw at the Mick George Arena.

Lee Bradbury was the Moulton scorer in a game that saw new Moulton skipper Billy King miss an early penalty.

Away from the competitive action, Spalding United lost their final pre-season fixture of the summer 2-0 at Skegness Town.

More football throughout the week and in Thursday’s edition of The Spalding and South Holland Voice.
