Lap record and handy third place for Andy at Silverstone

Spalding’s Andy Molsom smashed another lap record on the Caterham scene as he lit up the Silverstone GP circuit.

On the first day of the weekend meet, Molsom – of Molsom & Associates Optometrists – faced qualifying amid wet conditions.

It proved a difficult session for him – and he placed 19th and 17th respectively for Saturday and Sundays races.

Saturday’s race was very wet, with poor visibility due to the spray from other cars. However, a good start and first lap helped Molsom make progress.

By the end of the 30-minute race he had made his way up to tenth on the road, and sixth in class.

On race one, Molsom said: “The conditions made for a difficult slippery race, especially the first few laps, with so much spray that visibility was practically zero.

“But I paced myself and kept ticking off the cars ahead one by one.”

Sunday’s race saw Molsom line-up 17th on the grid – and again, a good start was immediately rewarded by moving up the order. Pushing hard, he made it to the front of the pack, taking the lead from the 2014 champion and current championship leader Toby Briant.

Over the next few laps Briant and Molsom gained a small lead over the rest of the field, swapping the lead position several times.

On the last lap, Martin Collier made a charge and caught Briant and Molsom, and despite going into Brooklands corner all together, Molsom lost out and finished the race in third – just 0.3 seconds behind the winner, Briant.

Molsom yet again broke the lap record for his class at, which reinforces his fastest at Cadwell Park last month and complements his 2012 record at Rockingham.

Molsom added: “It was an excellent weekend. Despite the difficult qualifying, I made up for it in both races, especially on Sunday. Even though I couldn’t take the win, I broke another lap record and I am pleased with making up so many places and challenging for the win.”

Molsom leaves Silverstone in sixth place in the championship, but just 13 points off the lead.

There are eight races remaining at four different circuits, with the next race at Donington Park on the weekend of July 11 and 12.
