Weekend of woe for Kirton’s Ben Wilson at Snetterton

Snetterton proved to be a disaster for Kirton rider Ben Wilson at the weekend.

The Gearlink Kawasaki racer was unable to complete even a lap in qualifying for the MCE British Supersport meet on Saturday due to issues with the bike – and then crashed out of both races.

Wilson suffered all weekend with his Kawasaki, but did at least manage to record five or six laps in each of Friday’s two free practice sessions.

But once the solitary qualifying began on Saturday, he returned to the pits without a lap to his name and was forced to begin the sprint race from the back of the gird.

Typically, Wilson got away to a good start and was in the middle of the pack fighting for places until he was caught out as he jostled for position and crashed on the first lap.

Beleagured Wilson was again placed on the back row of the grid for the start of the feature race – and this time the bike shot off the line, making up a few places to 14th on the first lap.

He continued to move up the field and powered through to eighth position on lap seven of 15. He then set about reeling in Jake Dixon, who was circulating some five seconds ahead.

But it all went wrong when he crashed out at Agostini corner on lap nine.

There was a dramatic finish to the race up the field, with the two leaders crashing on the final lap to gift the win to Wilson’s Gearlink Kawasaki team-mate Glenn Irwin.

Wilson said: “I just don’t know what I can say, it’s been a mare of a weekend. I just want to put it behind me and move on to the next round.”

The next round is at Knockhill in Scotland over the weekend of July 3-5. Wilson goes into the race in ninth place in the rider standings, a whopping 86 points behind series leader Luke Stapleford.
