Skipper Slater salutes super Spalding ladies after big win

Spalding Town’s ladies made the perfect start to their Lincolnshire Women’s Cricket League campaign with a dominant win over Scunthorpe on Sunday.

The Spalding girls won the toss and made what proved to be an inspired choice to bowl first.

Opening pair Hayley Jones (3-12) and Amelia Gardener (2-17) bowled superbly – and the wickets duly fell.

Yasmin Martin (2-14), Samantha Featherstone (2-6) and Katie Street (0-9) also kept the bowling standards high and Scunthorpe were soon all out for 65.

Town were equally impressive in the field, with Jess Wilson’s fancy fielding assisting a run out and skipper Stacey Slater taking a sharp edge in her role as wicket-keeper, while Nicki Curran,

Brittany Kidd and Rhianna Jukes gave a solid performances too.

In response, Spalding successfully knocked the total off in less than 16 overs.

Featherstone anchored the innings with 29 not out, while Gardner made 13 before being given out LBW.

Jones (7) also made a solid start before being bowled, leaving Martin (1 not out) there at the end with Featherstone.

It was a hard-hitting batting performance from Spalding – leaving skipper Slater jubilant.

“What an amazing start to the season,” said the captain. “I couldn’t be prouder of the girls, every one of them made a fantastic effort.

“The girls demonstrated a high standard of cricket and we were rewarded with the fantastic result.

“I am one happy captain.”
