Late winner earns positive Tigers the points

A 91st minute winner gave Holbeach United all three points on Saturday.

Kartell O’Neill-Martin was on hand to net the late goal that earned a 1-0 win over Wroxham Reserves in the Thurlow Nunn Division One North.

The Tigers gave a debut to right back Jemar Laidley and he was particularly excellent proving an attacking presence on the wing.

When he himself wasn’t getting in behind Wroxham’s back line and having efforts saved, he turned creator, not least when putting Adbul-Hamid Couchane though on goal but his shot was well saved.

“He’s a powerful, athletic full-back who’s very comfortable on the ball and loves to get forward,” said Holbeach manager Joe Sims. “He gives us another dimension, and brings something different to the options we’ve already got, he can defend well one v one and provide great support to the wingers.

“It’s another important addition as we continue to strengthen the squad and build competition for places going into the winter months.”

Holbeach stopper Jack Sellars produced a good save to deny a half volley as the game opened up.

A week after a surprise defeat to Needham Reserves, Holbeach had the chance to go ahead midway through the second period when Abdulaziz Touaiti down the right cut back and was unceremoniously brought down in the area.

O’Neill-Martin, not long off the bench, took the kick and went for the corner but the keeper saved well at full stretch.

The striker though bounced back and ensured the points still went Holbeach’s way.

A brilliant ball opened up the defence before the cut back was directed to sub O’Neill-Martin who was able to find the finish.

As well as Laidley, Sims started Jordan Goult in defence, returning to the club after a spell away.

“We’ve brought him in to add leadership and experience to the group, which I think will really complement the talented younger lads we’ve got coming through,” he said. “He’s a reliable, no-nonsense defender who knows the club, and I think he’ll be an important addition as we head into the nitty-gritty of the winter period.”

Holbeach’s run of playing reserve sides continues on Saturday as they visit Newmarket Town.

Tigers: Sellars, Laidley, Cornbill, Goult, Ahamed, Hyde, Touaiti, Coelho, Couchane, Jammeh, West. Subs: Barbsy, Wilkshire, Krirek, O’’Neill-Martin.
Attendance: 61.
