Sunday best puts Sutton up two spots

A sparse fixture list saw just three South Holland teams in action during a catch-up week in the East Men’s and Women’s Leagues.

Both Long Sutton first teams took to the field, with Spalding men’s thirds also playing.
A 45th-minute goal condemned Long Sutton Ladies to defeat at second-placed Cambridge University Fourths in Division Three North West.
A Sunday match saw the men’s first team climb two places in the Division Two North West standings with a 3-0 victory over Cambridge University Fourths.
Mckenzie East put them ahead after 21 minutes and Dan Plant doubled the advantage soon after.
It was left to Josh Fyson to complete the scoring just before the hour mark from a penalty corner to extend the visitors’ losing start to six games.
Spalding Men’s Thirds missed the chance to go joint top of Division Four North West when they went down by the odd goal in seven at Cambridge City Fifths.
Spalding scored first after 20 minutes when Dylan Hind slotted home from a penalty corner.
Cambridge found a quick response to equalise but Spalding worked hard to keep the ball in their attacking half and put pressure on the City defence.
It paid off when Tom Eve took his chance to score a great goal, giving the Maroons the lead once again. However, another Cambridge equaliser saw the two teams head into the break level at 2-2.
The home team were first to strike in the second half with a penalty corner and Jason Naylor’s green card put the visitors under further pressure.
A fortuitous Cambridge goal gave them a two-goal buffer but Spalding continued to battle both the opposition and the elements and their persistence paid off .
Dylan Hind’s spectacular eye-of-a-needle pass found Russ Watts, who used the pace of the pass to deflect the ball into the goal to make it 4-3.
The man of the match was goalkeeper James Booth for his great effort and fantastic saves.
