Politicians look to support parade

The volunteers behind Spalding Flower Parade are looking at both its finances and its future after receiving support from several politicians.

The announcement of the 2027 event being cancelled came as a surprise to both MP Sir John Hayes, who had put money into it, and South Holland District Council leader Nick Worth.
He says the authority had made an offer of a donation that was thought would be enough to ensure it went ahead next year.
But, he said the committee hadn’t got back to him.
The committee has experienced several changes recently, with Lee Dickens taking on the role of director.
He said around his other commitments, he and the current committee are still looking at all the details surrounding the event.
“We will be looking at what options are available to us over the coming months,” said Lee, who is the third official director of the Community Interest Company (CIC).
Any offers were made while a previous director was leading the company, he said.
Coun Worth said: “It is disappointing to hear that the Spalding Flower Parade will not be taking place next year.
“South Holland District Council had offered significant financial support towards the event, but we understand that substantially more funding would be required to make the parade viable, which has led to the organiser’s decision.
“We would be pleased to work with them in the future as the parade has long been a popular and much-valued part of Spalding’s events calendar.”
South Holland MP Sir John said he’d worked with the Spalding Flower Parade committee on trying to secure a grant through the Arts Council, but it requires CICs to have at least three directors.
Alongside Mr Dickens, the committee has only one other, Agne Storpirstye, who was appointed to the role two weeks ago.
They are also taking on the role of secretary which has recently become vacant.
The CIC was set up by the volunteers in a bid for the finances to be as transparent as possible.
They galvanised themselves to ensure the 2025 parade went ahead after it had initially been cancelled.
Sir John said: “I’ve had positive discussions with the organisers and they have my full support.
“We’re talking about several funding avenues to ensure this fantastic event has a future.”
