Lecture looks at climate education

Since 1710, Spalding Gentlemen’s Society has been bringing its members together to discuss the latest news and discoveries.
Over the decades, the society’s pursuit of knowledge has encouraged exploration in medicine, botany, optics and engineering – all of which have helped shape our understanding of science and nature today.
Now, the society is focusing firmly on the future with its lecture ‘Science, Solutions and Schools’, which will be held tomorrow (Friday).
The talk will explore the question: what do young people know about climate change, and what might they need for the future?
In this lecture, Andrew Charlton-Perez – head of school of mathematical, computational and physical sciences and professor of meteorology at the University of Reading – will investigate how national education policy has changed in recent years and what a future with high-quality, universal climate education might look like.
Andrew leads the national Climate Ambassador volunteering scheme, funded by the Department for Education, which aims to help all nurseries, schools and colleges develop action plans to reduce their environmental impact and become more resilient to the changing climate.
The lecture will also be a personal journey.
As a proud Fenman, Andrew will reflect on what it was like to grow up in the Fens with an interest in weather and climate and how this has shaped his professional life.
Tickets are available on the door at Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding. They are £5 per person, with free entry for full-time students.
Doors open at 7pm and the lecture starts at 7.30pm.
