Success for the Bowls Lincolnshire men’s Middleton Cup county team

Another week of local bowls league action began in the section 4 EBA fours league, as Royal Mail Cart A, looking for a fourth straight win, faced Whaplode Drove BC.

In what was a very tight affair on a tough green, the side closed out the game by 53 shots to 47, collecting six of the eight points available.

They won on two rinks with the top winning rink skipped by Martin Spencer, with Steve Hill, Ben Sharp and Chelsea Spencer, who won 19-7.

Rink scores: Steve Hill, Ben Sharp, Chelsea Spencer and Martin Spencer won 19-7; Dan Mills, Nigel Brown, Ben Wilson and Kevin Ekins won 20-17; Sally Humphries, Chris Mycock, Graham Smith and Andy Dunham lost 14-23.

Royal Mail Cart B’s match against Castle BC was postponed due to many of the opposition players playing at a tournament in Skegness.

  • Royal Mail Cart A in Division 2 played away against Goodfellowship BC last week and after only one victory in their first six matches were looking to kick-start their season.

The side lost out by 45 shots to 61 but they did gain four points with two winning rinks from the ten available.

Winning on two from the three rinks (but losing heavily on the third rink), the top rink was skipped by Ian Brickles, with Alan Shakespeare and Graham Brickles who won 17-13.

  • After a defeat in their last league match, Royal Mail Cart B were looking to bounce back in Division 1 at home against Consti BC last Tuesday and won by 61 shots to 38, collecting eight points from the ten available.
    Winning on two from the three rinks, the top rink was skipped by Paul Turner, with Sue Jackson and Stuart Callaby who won 29-12.

Rink scores: Sue Jackson, Stuart Callaby and Paul Turner won 29-12; Charlie Thurston, Keira Thurston and Andrew Thurston won 23-12; Nigel Brown, Ben Sharp and Mick Dolton lost 9-14.

  • Moving forward to the Thursday night league with both sides in the ‘12 players’ division, the A team went away to Carter’s Park BC and had started the season perfectly with three wins from three games; however on a difficult green, the home team proved too much for the Mail Cart players and they lost by 62 shots to 75 gaining just one rink and one point from the six available.

The winning rink was skipped by captain Dan Mills, with Mel Mashford and Mick Dolton, who won 23-9.

The B team, in the same league, were at home against Castle BC last Thursday, and still couldn’t get their first victory, losing out by 64 shots to 88 and gaining just one rink and one point from the six available.

The winning rink was skipped by Alan Shakespeare, with Sue Jackson and Graham Brickles, who won 18-15.

  • The Friday afternoon league saw Long Sutton BC as the host club in Division 1.

The A team rink of Stuart Callaby, George Richardson and Paul Turner played against Carter’s Park BC B and obtained another victory by 26 shots to seven and collected another two league points, whereas the still unbeaten B team consisting of Graham Astley, Alan Shakespeare and Aidan Brickles played Gosberton BC A and suffered their first defeat of the season by 20 shots to 24.

  • After three straight defeats, the Mail Cart Friday night league team were hoping to get back to winning ways with this week’s match at home against Moulton Harrox BC and managed to achieve this with a 61 shots to 40 victory, claiming four points from the five available.

Winning on two from the three rinks, the top rink was skipped by Rob Lacey, with John Breed and Graham Brickles, who won 32-8.

Rink scores: John Breed, Graham Brickles and Rob Lacey won 32-8; Joy Hardacre, George Richardson and Ed Baxter won 19-15; Mel Mashford, Judith Lacey and Ian Brickles lost 10-27.

  • Congratulations to the Bowls Lincolnshire men’s county Middleton Cup team, winning their second and perhaps decisive group stage match by 46 shots (116-70) and collecting 21 points from the 22 available against Bowls Leicestershire at Blackstones BC last Saturday.

The players representing Lincolnshire from Royal Mail Cart were Ashley Caress, Andy Dunham, Kevin Ekins, Steve Hill, Dominic McVittie, Dan Mills, Chris Mycock, Jordan Philpott and the captain/manager Martin Spencer.

The final match in their group will be versus Bowls Nottinghamshire away at Newark Northern BC on July 11, where they require two points to secure their place at the national quarter finals.

The Bowls Lincolnshire ladies’ county Johns Trophy team lost in their opening match but won their second group stage fixture by 45 shots (120-75), collecting 20 points from the 22 available against Bowls Derbyshire away at Long Eaton Town BC last Saturday.

Nottinghamshire at Burton House BC on July 11, where they need to win and hope the Bowls Leicestershire team slip up in order to qualify for the national quarter finals.

  • The Skegness over-55 bowls tournament was held last week at the Suncastle greens in the town and saw success for Royal Mail Cart bowlers John Allen, Tracy Philpott and Phil Cooke who won the open triples event.
