Volunteers sought to clean up area

A Spalding group is urging volunteers to help it improve a town grot spot this weekend.

Spalding and District Civic Society is taking part in Fix One Thing Day on Saturday, June 20.
The initiative organised by the Civic Voice, a national charity that oversees such groups nationally, is encouraging them to work together to improve a part of the town a society covers.
The Spalding group has chosen to attempt to tidy up the bedding plant area in front of the BT offices on Winsover Road.
Members are working with Greenwell Horticultural Therapy and encouraging volunteers to help them clear the space of weeds.
John Bland, chair of Spalding and District Civic Society said: “The bedding area was planted up with fuchsias and other planting by volunteers a few years ago which would look so much better if the weeds and wild buddleia were removed.
“The brickwork around the bedding area does need rebuilding and we have asked BT whether they are willing to do their bit to tidy up their frontage and we are waiting to hear from them, but regardless of whether they respond or not, we see no reason why they could object to this area being tidied.”
The society says that if there’s enough volunteers and time, it will also look to tidy up some of the bedding areas on the riverbank in town.
“No specific gardening knowledge is required, but this activity is ideally suited for those with gardens who have the equipment to hand.
The volunteers are meeting at 10am.
