Half a century of representing area

Two councillors have been recognised for 50 years of service to the area.

Bryan Alcock and Chris Brewis have been on South Holland District Council since being elected when the authority started life in 1976.

At last week’s full meeting of the authority, Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Toby Denis, the King’s representative in the county, presented both with certificates to mark their half century.

Leader Coun Nick Worth said of the independent councillors: “They are both still a force to be reckoned with.

“If you mention Sutton Bridge, you automatically think of Chris Brewis, the man in the white hat.

“Or you think of Crowland and think of Bryan Alcock.

“Chris has the most amazing knowledge; I’d describe him as like a walking encyclopedia.

“He’s been a brilliant scrutiny member over many years with his intimate knowledge of flooding, drainage boards, planning and trains.

“He’s also been a long standing governor of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn.”

“Bryan was more many years the chairman of planning and when I started he was almost regarded as a god. Some might think he still is.

“For 25 years he’s been the chair of the scrutiny committee and has the knack of asking the one question you really don’t want him to ask.

“Both of them have had portfolio holders squirming in their seats on a regular basis.

“They’re both a credit to SHDC and their achievements over 50 years are phenomenal.

“It’s only right we honour and salute these two councillors for making a real difference to the council and in particular to Crowland and Sutton Bridge.”

South Holland Independents leader Paul Barnes called both ‘truly remarkable’ and ‘true public service servants’.

“It’s 50 years of school children helped, communities improved, difficult decisions taken and countless quiet acts of dedication that didn’t make headlines but made a difference.

“Thank you for providing that public service done well that has really stood the test of time.”

Coun Alcock said: “It’s been a privilege to serve and an exciting ride.”

Coun Brewis added: “It doesn’t seem like 50 years ago since both myself and Bryan were first elected.

“I only stood first time because someone bet £5 I wouldn’t. I did collect the £5.

I’ve been so grateful for all the help I’ve had from many officers and members. I’m proud to come from the only parish in the country with three counties and I’m proud for the people of Sutton Bridge and the district for what they’ve done.”
