Spalding ace Anita masters tough conditions to take medal victory

An impressive 43 members of Spalding Golf Club’s ladies’ section battled it out for prizes galore at the Hills-sponsored April Medal.

The overall scores for the day reflected the poor conditions – and the standard scratch went out to 77, with reductions only.

Anita Cross, with a net 77, was the overall winner on the day – but there were a host of other impressive performers.

Results: Cat 3 (29-36 handicap) – 1st Elaine Harrison 81; 2nd Chris Vickers 82; 3rd Jenny Wilson 84. Cat 2 (21-28) – 1st Jackie Bailey Scott 78; 2nd Jennifer Pipe 79; 3rd Sue Matthews 80. Cat 1 (0-20) – 1st Barbara Newcombe 78; 2nd Lesley Williams 83; 3rd Elizabeth Holbrook 83.

  • League result: Carholme 1.5 Spalding B 2.5 (Ruth Atkins & Paula Brown lost 4&2, Anita Cross & Barbara Newcombe won 1up, Sue Watson & Jacquie Clare won 1up, Anne Ellis & Jean White halved).
  • The Sunday Medal, which attracted a small entry of nine, was won by Tilly Garfoot with a magnificent net 69. This earned her a handicap cut from 36 to 34. Second place went to Jackie Bailey Scott (net 76), with Tracy Siddle (net 77) in third.
  • Some 38 ladies entered the first-ever Myrtle Glenny Cup – and it was Tracy Siddle who won the Stableford competition on 39 points. Her handicap was cut from 20 to 19 as a result.

Second place went to Elaine Harrison on 38 points – and her handicap was cut from 30 to 29 too.

Theresa Starbuck (37pts) took third position.

  • League result: Stoke Rochford 3 Spalding 1 (Pat West & Dianne Platt won 3&2, Elizabeth Holbrook & Clare Rylott lost 4&3, Lesley Williams & Ruth Atkins lost 2 down, Paula Brown & Anita Cross lost 3&2).
