A devastating cyclone which barely made headlines in this country left families in Sri Lanka struggling to replace all they lost in November.
Many children lost their school uniforms and educational materials while their parents suffered financial hardship and couldn’t replace everything.
The new academic term started in January and thanks to members from the Spalding branch of the Rotary Club practical help was on its way.
Local club member Shamal Warnakasuluriya, originally from Sri Lanka, told fellow members what had happened.
A £1,000 donation was sent to Kandy Heritage for immediate replacement of uniforms and equipment.
“Much of our charitable work goes towards helping local young people thrive, so we are delighted to be able to extend this and help children in another community, in a tangible way,” said Spalding club president Graham
Dawson.
“I extend our sincere gratitude to the Rotary Club of Spalding for their generous contribution. This will directly assist children who have lost their school uniforms and essential learning materials, enabling them to recommence their education with dignity,” said Prasanna Sellaiah, treasurer of Kandy Heritage.
