New boys Donington B take Spalding League title crown

League newcomers came together for a winner-takes-all battle for the Spalding & District League crown.

It was hosts Donington B who emerged victorious to lift the title as they saw off Broadway 5-2 in their final match of the season.

Only 19 points separated them overall on the aggregate scoring. Donington took the first frame with Mick Pearl (r25) beating Andy Wheatley (o05) 200-177.

Gary Norman (o275) levelled by edging out Neil Reynolds (o55) 200-179, making 10 breaks, including a 64 and 56. Reynolds had four breaks, with the highest being 33.

A deciding frame between Neil Burton (r70) of Donington and Steve Singh (o50) was another close game with Burton winning 200-183.

Although Broadway have another fixture to play, they cannot catch Donington who are eight points clear.

Pearl and Reynolds will share the most wins trophy after ending the season with 12 wins each.

On a busy night at Donington, their A team ran out 5-2 winners against Consti.

Nigel Brasier (r40) got them off to a winning start with a 200-49 win against Mick Johnson (o60). Alan Hansard (r75) made it all square by defeating Ben Wrigglesworth (r15) 200-175 and it was left to Tony Scully (r45) and

John Bellerby (r105) to fight out the deciding frame, which Scully won 200-190.

Bourne Pyramid B were 5-2 winners against their own A team. Maurice Phillipson (r85) beat John Clapton (r115) 200-190. Grandad and grandson then played each other as Phil Cooke (r100) for the B team took on Reegan Cooke-Holmes (r70) but the younger man won 200-172 to make it all square.

It was left to a clash of the captains to decide the match, with Darrell Read (r35) getting victory for the B team by winning 200-162 against John Twell (r50).

Holbeach B also beat their A team 5-2. Mick Cooper (o195) got the A team off to a good start with a 200-193 victory against Andy Spearman (r80). Cooper made six breaks, including a 60 and 55.

Jason Rose (o05) and Denis Hix (r70) were next to the table and, despite a 48 break by Rose, it was Hix who won 200-175.

Neil Harvey (r30) then had a 200-194 against John Dawson (r60) to seal the win.

Outstanding games will be played this week before attention turns to the Carter Shield, a new mini leagues system which will be played on Monday evenings.
