LETTERS – Have a look for animals

At this time of bonfires and fireworks spare a thought for hedgehogs.

Sadly, they are particularly vulnerable at this time of year, as hibernation approaches and a pyre can be mistaken for a hibernation nest.

Encountering a hedgehog was a common nocturnal event only a few decades ago.

Now, aside from occasional roadside tragedies, hedgehogs are an increasingly rare sight in our towns and villages, and they are in danger of extinction unless action is taken.

If you are organising or involved in a bonfire event, ensure that hedgehogs are at the forefront of you mind.

Please check your pyres immediately beforehand and take precautions to protect the poor hedgehogs.
