Business brains in Year Six

Year six pupils at Spalding Parish C of E Day School ended their primary school journey on a high note with a term of inspiring enterprise, sustainability, and celebration.

As part of their final term, the students launched an after-school ice cream initiative, surveying children across the school to determine popular flavours and pricing.

They then applied their numeracy skills to calculate profit and loss, gaining valuable real world experience in budgeting and business planning.

The entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there.

After experiencing the World of Work — an initiative they’ve taken part in from Year Three to Year Five — the pupils took part in the Make £5 Grow challenge, where they developed and pitched their own sustainable business ideas.

Their businesses included eco-themed games to educate younger pupils on protecting the planet, rehoming stations for pre-loved toys and sports and well-being activities designed to encourage healthy habits and mindfulness.

To deepen their understanding of sustainability and local enterprise, the pupils also visited a range of local businesses including Springfields, Turners, Coocumber, The Shoppe, and Rookes.
Interim executive head Diane Mulley and interim Head of School, Emily Hill praised the students.

A statement said: “Our Year Six pupils have shown incredible initiative, compassion and leadership.

“They’ve not only celebrated their time at primary school but have also left a lasting impact on our school community.

“As they prepare to move on to secondary school, these young change makers have proven they are more than ready for the challenges ahead — armed with confidence, creativity, and a passion for positive change.”
