Players remember Steve

Spalding Town Tennis Club hosted the second charity tournament in memory of Steve Machin MBE.

The tournament proved to be a massive success with a doubles competition, plus raffle and barbecue with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer. The initial target of £500 was smashed with a staggering final total raised of £2,520.

Many of his family and friends joined tennis club members to celebrate his life, enjoy a day of competitive tennis and raise money for charity.

The Steve Machin Memorial Shield was won by Joseph Brookes and Ollie Machin, who came out victorious in a closely fought final against Ryan Bridge and Julian Thompson.

A club spokesman said: “It was an amazing day dedicated to a much loved and greatly missed member of the club.

“It was the perfect way to remember a respected friend, family man and hero to so many.”

Steve was a much-loved member of the tennis club as well as a dedicated Spalding Rugby Club player and coach.

He was head of counter terrorism at Whitemoor Prison and was awarded the MBE for his heroism disarming a terrorist attacker on London Bridge in 2019. He died in 2023 after a short battle with cancer.

Thanks were expressed to everyone who supported the event, including the numerous local businesses that donated raffle prizes.
