Spalding Ladies’ 1s 7
Cambridge Nomads 3
Spalding went out on a high to reach the Christmas break sitting comfortably on top of Women’s East League Division Two North West
Evie Maltby played the ball through for Georgina Maplethorpe to open the scoring but Nomads quickly levelled. Maplethorpe saw another opening to make 2-1 only for the visitors to capitalise from another short corner to leave it all square at the interval.
The Cambridge side opened the second-half scoring but that was as good as it got for them as Spalding stepped up the pace to storm clear. A short corner was shot into the bottom corner of the goal by Karen Timby for a deflection by Charlotte Maplethorpe.
Ellie Holland added another and further goals came from Hennie Boekestyn and Ellie Holland before another short corner saw Holland’s strike deflected in by Maplethorpe.
Player of the match was Karen Timby for midfield distribution.
The second team match at Cambridge City fifth team was called off.
Haverhill 2
Spalding Ladies’ 3s 1
A horrible, wet and windy trek to the Suffolk/Essex border was not ideal preparation for Spalding’s Division Four North West match.
Despite having to battle hard against the conditions, Spalding dominated the game and passed the ball around confidently.
They had many shots on goal but were not able to convert and it was Haverhill who held the half-time lead.
Kelly Tizzano found Lisa Dean with a tight sideline pass and she smashed the ball in the attacking D, where Khloe Brewster slotted the ball into the goal to make it 1-1.
However, shortly after Haverhill scored their second from a short corner.
Despite some beautiful play on the left between sisters Poppy and Lilly Hooker another equaliser was not forthcoming.
On her team debut, player of the match Lilly Hooker managed to take the ball round all the Haverhill defensive players for a shot on goal but could not beat the goalkeeper.
