As a cold blast of winter arrives in South Holland, our appeal to make Winter Warmer for older residents is more timely than ever.
Rising energy costs, losing the annual winter payment and the cost of living crisis are leaving some older people not being able to afford heating and food.
We have joined forces with the Holbeach Heros Facebook page which is appealing for items to help keep older people warm.
Sarah Phoenix, who launched the Heros Facebook page during the time of the pandemic, said there was a rising need within the area to help older people.
“Some of our elderly residents are struggling, and are often very reluctant to accept help. But it’s very sad and they shouldn’t be in that situation.
“We have had requests for gloves and hats, and we want to help them whenever we can,” she said.
Readers can donate new, or nearly new, items which can be taken to the Holbeach Hub, Boston Road South, or the NatWest Bank in Spalding Market Place.

The donations will be collected by district council member Mark Le Sage who is backing the appeal.
“We are appealing for new or really good quality clean, undamaged used blankets and new, warm socks, gloves and neckwarmers to support the vulnerable in our area,” he said.
Winter heating payments are only available to people receiving certain benefits, one of which is Pension Credit. Applications for this year close on December 21 and South Lincolnshire Age Concern can help. Call 03455 564144 between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
