Village marks anniversary of battle

Donington marked the 80th anniversary of The Battle of Arnhem as residents remembered those involved that were based in the village.

Sunday saw its annual service in memory of the 1st Parachute Regiment who were involved in Operation Market Garden, an attempt to invade Germany as part of World War II.
It concluded at Arnhem where thousands were killed or captured, many of whom had trained for the event in the preceding months in Donington.
Last Sunday’s service saw six standard bearers in attendance.
Katie Coupland played a very moving version of The Last Post in the church.
Eddie Finch, one of the organisers, said: “It was very well attended, including by sons, daughters and grandchildren of the veterans.
“There ere beautiful flower arrangements by Daphne Gilks, local military enthusiast Chris Chandler had an excellent display in the church hall and there was delicious refreshments provided by Jill Fearns family and her team of volunteers.”
