Crossing, bus clearway and speed restriction being looked at

A bid to stop vehicles parking at a bus stop in Little London, a new crossing in Spalding town centre and a speed limit reduction are among items to be discussed by a planning committee this week.

Lincolnshire County Council, which is responsible for Highways, will discuss the measures at its Planning and Regulation Committee next week.
The proposals include a new pedestrian crossing at Bridge Street in Spalding linking the town centre to the seating area near High Bridge.
The report to the meeting said the authority looked at a zebra crossing but that could disrupt traffic flow, so a ‘puffin crossing’ (one with traffic lights) is being proposed with the lights be synchronised to the existing ones on High Bridge.
* The plan to install a bus clearway on Little London is due to vehicles parking at the current stop opposite the convenience store.
That prevents buses from accessing the raised kerb provided for passengers with mobility issues the report to the committee states.
The council received one objection with the objector stating there was an ‘unofficial clearway marking in place’ that wasn’t enforced and that it was a loss of on- street parking used by carers and those transporting vulnerable residents.
Council officers though argue there’s off-road public parking across the road and surveys state it’s people visiting local businesses who are also parking in front of the bus stop.
If passed, the clearway would be operational from 7am to 8pm.
* The planning committee will also be asked whether a 30mph or 40mph speed limit should be created through part of Tongue End where it’s currently 60mph.
County council officers say that, following surveys, the average speed through the hamlet is 36mph.
It says there have been no reported accidents during the last five years and that it’s a ‘borderline case’ as to whether a speed restriction is needed.
