Sutton off the mark in Prem

Long Sutton have picked up their first win of the Lincolnshire Premier League season by beating defending champions and previous league leaders Lindum in a rain affected game.

The Lincoln side opted to field first at a damp Paradise Field and Sutton’s Calvin Bird (13) and Nathan Oliver (11) provided a steady start putting on 33 in the opening stand.
Three quick wickets from Andy Harris (3 for 16) however made it 34 for 3.
That brought in Dan Oldfield and on a sticky wicket and with rain threatening, he hit what proved to be a match winning 39 off 25 balls including four fours and two sixes.
Backed by Davico Kruger (17) and Jacob Gray (8), Oldfield got Sutton up to 104 from what turned out to be a 20 over innings before it was halted by the rain.
After the weather had cleared it meant Lindum were set a revised target of 121 from 20 overs.
Sutton made the perfect start to Lindum’s innings having William Wright caught behind off Paul Edgeller (1 for 15) before skipper Will Taylor was bowled by Kruger (1 fo 17) for a duck to leave the visitors 2 for 2.
Pranav Pothula (28) and Tom Marshall (19) provided Lindum with a base, but when it came to trying to up the rate, the home side struck taking 5 for 35 as 44 for 3 became 79 for 7.
Sutton skipper Jake Burton (1 for 21) started the collapse spinning one past Marshall who was stumped by Bird.
Charlie Crisp (1 for 13) had Pothula caught by Oldfield before Joe Whitaker showed his class taking 3 for 20 as Lindum were kept in check.
A just short of a run a ball 20 not out from Aidan Lockwood and Zac Shelbourne’s 15 from eight before being ran out could only get the visitors to 105 for 8 to ensure Long Sutton won by 15 runs, taking 18 points to Lindum’s two.
Sutton remain bottom but moved level on points with next Saturday’s opponent Grimsby Town and just ten behind Spalding Town in 10th position.
Spalding Town’s scheduled game on Saturday against Woodhall Spa was rained off.
Long Sutton 2nd XI were also among the few teams to get in a full game on Saturday, but they were defeated at promotion- chasing Ketton in South Lincs and Border League Division One.
