I just had John Hayes’ very posh and glossy election leaflet through the letterbox. It came by post too – an expensive way to leaflet, but one thing the Tory party isn’t short of is money.
The brochure is twice the size of the other parties’ and chock full of all the things he does locally – not much mention of national policy. This is not surprising, given the many ‘nasties’ John has voted for in parliament – and this is what really matters to me.
Whichever politician gets in, they will do things locally to keep us all on side. However, it’s not these things that impact all of us. Yes, it’s good to get development stopped on Mill Field or the leisure centre sorted, and I’ll be happy for their success.
However, I worry more about my MP voting against laws to promote equality and human rights, for example. Against taxes on banks or against landlords having to pay the cost of building safety work. Or for yet another increase in the pension age.
The majority of us are impacted by what is done in Parliament, and I would say Sir John has voted for some very ‘people unfriendly’ initiatives. You can check this out for yourselves if you go online and ask ‘How did my MP vote?’ It’s an eye-opener!
