Project continues in Spalding’s Wygate Park with South Holland Community Church ‘taking back seat’

A community centre for Spalding’s Wygate Park could come to fruition without the church which was due to be a partner.

In the next couple of weeks, about 1,400 homes on the estate will receive a survey aiming to gauge enthusiasm and suggestions as to what should be included.

The project has been mooted for a long time, but it gathered pace last summer when South Holland Community Church – which is currently based at Ayscoughfee Hall School hall – indicated a desire to become involved.
But Pastor Kevin Taylor said the church is now looking at town centre premises.

He said: “We’re presently looking at a different opportunity.
“That’s not to say that we won’t be involved in the Wygate Park project any longer but we have taken more of a back seat.”

Wygate district councillor Roger Gambba-Jones wants to see a community hub developed to give the estate a focus and somewhere to bring neighbours together.
“It’s not just about having a building, there’s a community benefit in respect of facilities for things like adult fitness classes,” he said.

South Holland District Council is overseeing the project.
A spokesman said: “1,400 copies of a paper survey will be going out to residents in the immediate area over the next couple of weeks.
“The survey will ask people if they would like to see a community facility built there and, if so, what type of facility.
“The survey will be collected through Community Lincs, so there will be no need for residents to return it themselves.”

Community Lincs is a charity helping communites improve. The survey can be completed online too.
