In response to the letter from UKIP’s Paul Foyster, as a school we always take the chance to use a general election as an opportunity for all our students to understand the democratic process, discuss the political issues and get directly involved in a mock election.
The students in each of our six houses are currently selecting candidates for each of the five main parties (Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats, UKIP and the Green Party). They will then get involved in campaigning. As previously, we will invite local representatives from each of the parties to come into school and talk to our students in assemblies.
On May 7, we will then arrange for all students to vote for a candidate in their house “constituency” to determine a “parliament” for the school.
A previous student, Dan Wilson, was so engaged by our events regarding politics in school five years ago, that he took part in our mock election, and came second within the Bentley constituency.
He is now in his first year at Birmingham University studying Economics and is standing as the parliamentary candidate for real.
