Former leader Lifetime Legend

The former leader of South Holland District Council has been awarded a Lifetime Legend Award at a national ceremony.
Lord Gary Porter received the award from the Local Government Unit and CCLA’s annual Councillor awards in London last week.
A spokesman for the awards said: “The judging panel noted that in his two decades as Leader of the council, his determination to bring economic growth and opportunity to the area and every resident delivered real impact.
“In addition, his commitment and contribution to the wider local government sector stood out.”
Elected to South Holland in June 2001, Lord Porter was elected Leader in May 2003 and remained so until losing seat in 2023.
Elected as LGA Chairman 2015-2019, Lord Porter was awarded CBE in 2013 and elevated to House of Lords in 2015. In 2011, he gained a post-graduate certificate in shared services.
Jonathan Carr-West, chief executive, Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) said:“In the face of unprecedented domestic and global challenges over the last year, councillors nationwide have once again exhibited unwavering dedication to serving their constituents.
“Tonight’s winners show the remarkable contributions local councillors make to their communities and we at LGIU and CCLA are dedicated to celebrating the achievements that genuinely improve the lives of local residents.
“As councils continue to deliver essential services like social care and housing amid a cost of living crisis, these Awards are a hugely important way to champion what councillors do locally. I extend heartfelt congratulations to all the Councillor Awards winners this evening.
“We applaud you for your dedication.”
