Lambert leads team to glory

A Gosberton Risegate man led his team to a speedway title in spectacular fashion.
Simon Lambert says lifting the Championship Cup as captain of the Scunthorpe Scorpions was the best moment of his career.
The 34-year-old has been in the form of his life in recent seasons and won all four of his races in the second leg of the cup final at Poole Pirates, the league and previous three cup winners.
After Scunthorpe won the first 47-43, Lambert’s haul of 12 points helped his side to a 45-45 draw on the South Coast to ensure he was the one who lifted the trophy.
“It was such a fantastic feeling getting my hands on the cup and lifting it,” said Simon. “I’ve won the cup before with Peterborough in 2017, but to do it as captain was really special.
“My lad Kai, family and friends were all there watching, which was brilliant.
“I put in a personal best with four wins from four too.
“We only took a four point advantage to the away leg, but it was more than enough in the end as on a tough track we got the draw.
“It’s a massive achievement, I think my biggest.”
Simon got into speedway as a youngster after going with his family, got his first bike aged 15 and was a professional by 16.
“I think last year was my best ever season,” he said. “The last three or four have been the best of my career at Scunthorpe.”
It’s all the more remarkable given he’s been carrying an injured knee, something he immediately had surgery on last week in preparation for next season.
“I’m pretty sure I’ll be at Scunthorpe again next year,” he said. “I can’t wait for March and the new season to come around.
“We want to win the league next year, that’s something I’ve never won (Scunthorpe finished fourth in the table).
“After my knee operation I’ll be back better and stronger.”
