Tulips B’s top tier title charge halted by Consti F

Top tier leaders Tulips B saw their Spalding and District Snooker League title charge come a little unstuck at Consti F last Thursday night.

Tulips, who have played two games more than nearest rivals Services A, were handed a 4-2 reverse in the all-Spalding affair in a clash that went down to the very last black of the final frame.

Warren Peel (scr), who made a 20 break, took that decisive frame 61-57 against Tulips’ Mark Wilkinson (O14) to settle the contest.

Darren Woodberry (O28) had earlier pocketed breaks of 26 and 27 for Tulips, who are now seven points clear.

Donington C are now well positioned in third after winning a rearranged clash with Services E 5-1.

Ben Wrigglesworth (scr), Neil Reynolds (O49), Graham Slater (R7) and Neil Favell (O14) delivered the goods for the title hopefuls.

The two best breaks in Division One both came in the same game, as Long Sutton A edged out Holbeach A 4-2.

A fine 52 from Matt Smith (O42) helped clinch the game for Sutton in the final frame, while Holbeach’s Jem Merrison (O35) had earlier made a super 49 break.

Meanwhile, basement boys Crowland C earned a timely 4-2 triumph over Pyramid B to keep their survival hopes alive.

Joel Shears (R7) wrapped up what was only a third league victory of the season for Crowland in the penultimate frame of a clash that saw Richard Wesley (scr) and Spencer Dawkins (O49) bag breaks of 38 and 32 respectively.

Down in Division Two, Bourne SC A remain top of the pile after shading a close contest against Long Sutton D 4-2. Mick Byrne (R14) and Ian Clare (O14) won the final two frames to keep the leaders seven points clear.

Second-placed Crowland B were also 4-2 winners, having dispatched friendly foes Crowland A. Their victories came from Derek Tinkler (O7), Russell Morse (O7) and Jeff Roberts (R7), while the A team’s Simon Parker (scr) hit back with a 27 break.

Another of the leading sides, Consti B, were victorious to the tune of 4-2 as well. Services E were their victims, with the decisive frame being won by Martin Fear (O7). That leaves Consti B joint third after Boundary A were beaten 5-1 by struggling Consti H in perhaps the shock result of the night.

A 31 break from Seb Grimston (O21) got the hosts on their way to victory, with Doug Garfort (O14), Mark German (O21) and John Houldershaw (R14) completing the job.

Elsewhere, a 39 break from Marcus Pell (O21) couldn’t stop Division Three leaders Gosberton D from slipping to only a second loss of the season.

They were beaten 4-2 at Consti J, with Trev Braybrook (scr) grabbing the glory in the vital final frame.

That allowed Bourne SC B to close the gap at the summit to just seven points after they handed Long Sutton C a 5-1 home reverse. Karen Corr’s (O42) 28 break was the highlight for the high-fliers.

Services D also gained ground on the leaders as they beat Whittlesey B 4-2.

Michael Harrison (R7), Karen Howlett (R21) and Mark Howlett (O7) got the wins.
