We’d like to recognise the tremendous support which Sir John Hayes MP has provided to people affected by genetic haemochromatosis, the UK’s most common undiagnosed genetic condition.
There are 1.2 million people at risk of the condition, which causes people to develop iron overload. This, in turn can lead to cancer, liver disease, heart problems, diabetes and mental health issues.
Sir John has been steadfast in his support of our small charity since we re-located to Spalding four years ago. This has included chairing the All-Party Parliamentary Group on genetic haemochromatosis at Westminster and pressing ministers for improved NHS care.
These initiatives have been instrumental in helping us raise the patient voice with policymakers and elected representatives nationally.
Following his involvement, we are certain that the condition has risen to greater prominence and much improved public awareness. His support of our community has been a great encouragement to those of us affected by the condition. His quiet, behind-the-scenes advocacy has provided renewed hope for the thousands of people struggling with poor NHS care for iron overload.
