LETTERS – We must be ready

I don’t recall any previous local elections where ruling Tory groups all over England looked more like they are begging to keep their jobs.
It must be hard knowing that even their own party chairman expects to lose over 1,000 seats with the national party so far down in the polIs. A Conservative estimate, of course!
Should anyone claim national party politics has nothing to do with local government, that projected seat loss says otherwise.
I see the Conservatives are again saying that it’s wrong for independents to come together in a formal group, registered with the electoral commission.
It’s typical of the disinformation we’ve come to expect from all the national parties.
There are significant electoral advantages in doing this, which is why they don’t like it. They must think it should be reserved for the national political giants.
I don’t know what will happen on May 4 but if SH Independents manage to take the council we must be prepared to move smoothly with minimal disruption whilst we seek changes. It would be irresponsible not to do so.
That requires a structure, organisation and an agreement between candidates on district policies. We need to be prepared. We are and have enough experienced independent councillors, including several former Conservatives, to bring on newer members, just like the Tories do with new intakes.
We’ve had one party control in South Holland for many years, mostly due to low turnouts in elections. That’s far too long. It’s time to move forward, not for more of the same.
