Pat Rayment has expressed his delight at re-signing midfield ace Jack McGovern from Grantham Town.
McGovern, who was part of the Spalding side that won the UCL Knockout Cup under Rayment’s charge back in 2012/2013, will be in the squad for Saturday’s FA Trophy trip to Leek Town (3pm).
The Tulips chief reckons that signing the free-scoring central midfielder is a ‘risk-free’ move – and believes that he’ll help take his side to the next level.
“I’m delighted to be able to bring Jack back to the football club,” said a buzzing Rayment. “He’s a step two or three midfielder at least and will raise the bar here.
“I was on record of saying how disappointed I was to lose him previously, but he wanted higher-lever football that we couldn’t offer.
“Now we can – and it’ll be great to see what he brings to a team that is much better than the one he left.
“Usually when you sign a player, there’s an element of risk involved. That’s not the case with Jack as I know he’s a good lad and will fit in perfectly.
“He’s the ideal signing for this football club and is somebody that will help push us on even further. The competition for places is hotting up and Jack will help others raise their game.”
McGovern, who has also played for King’s Lynn Town since his first spell with the Tulips, was on contract with Evo-Stik League Premier Division side Grantham.
But the Gingerbreads’ financial restrictions have allowed Spalding to snap him up without paying a transfer free.
The swoop comes hot on the heels of Spalding’s signing of Boston Town winger Matt Kennedy on Tuesday (click here for that story).
Both should make their bows at Leek.
