TULIP TALK: Business awards are open for entries

We recently spoke to Phil Scarlett, president of the Spalding and District branch of the Chamber of Commerce and Harry Drury.

They told us of their plans for the upcoming Business Awards, which will take place at a “black tie” event at Springfields in November but applications have just opened for those businesses seeking further recognition from their peers locally.

Last year’s winner Harry, of We’ll Let Your House, is one of the judges for the awards and he told us that he found last year’s judging process to be a very useful way of focussing on the core activities of the business and as such resulted in him examining more closely some of his operation in a slightly different light.

He looks forward to sifting through the confidential entries this year and, with help from the rest of the panel, he feels sure this year’s winner will be a worthy one.

Phil told us of the recent appointment of Spalding’s new town centre manager, Maj Dennis Hannant.

Dennis is well known locally through his singing and Phil was most enthusiastic about the undoubted organisational talent that Dennis will bring to the job.

His army career spanned 43 years and included spells with other organisations some of whose operational methods Dennis will bring to the job in Spalding.

Phil told us a little of the tasks that Dennis will have to deal with and we all agreed that the first few months would be a busy time for the Musical Major.

We also spoke of the new Shopwatch Scheme, championed by Stuart Brotherton and the work he has put into getting both Springfields and Holbeach on board for the new monitoring scheme which will be based at Boston Police Station.

Finally we heard that the Spalding Branch has extended an invitation to Prime Minister David Cameron to visit Spalding and find out for himself how the town’s businesses are meeting the many challenges faced in our multicultural world today.

Whether he accepts is quite another matter however, although Phil remains optimistic.
