A group that aims to beat loneliness in one of the most isolated areas of the county says it needs more volunteers to come forward or it may have to close.
The East Elloe Good Neighbour Scheme, which covers Holbeach, Long Sutton and surrounding villages, offers a service where volunteers either go out or ring people for a chat who might otherwise be on their own.
But the charity says it needs more volunteers to meet demand.
There’s currently five active volunteers helping out with three on the committee.
The group’s Katy Gale said: “Without new volunteers we most certainly will not be able to continue this very important and worthwhile role in our community.
“In order for the service to continue we need volunteers who are able to support and manage the recruitment and retention of volunteers as well as a treasurer.
“If you can spare some time, it can be as little as half an hour per week, it could make a tremendous difference to a person who otherwise may be socially isolated.
“Volunteering in the community provides a genuine and safe connection to other people and could provide you with a new direction in life.
“Befriending offers others support by a telephone call or by visiting residents ensuring for them a better quality of life and having an exchange of ideas.”
The East Elloe Good Neighbour Scheme is also working towards having more call handlers and befrienders.
“Volunteer Befrienders do not need any special qualifications,” Katy continued. “Just the ability to listen and to have time for people.
“Full training is given along with a DBS check and further training courses are available.
“We do hope you will join us.”
There is also a critical need for a volunteer coordinator whose responsibilities include promotion, recruitment, supervision and support for volunteers and a treasurer to look after the organisations accounts, pay expenses etc.
