Queen’s pleasure at over 60s group’s 70th

The Queen has sent her best wishes to a Crowland group on its 70th anniversary.

Crowland Over 60s club marked the occasion with a special toast and music from Graham Cleaver at its meeting last Friday, July 15.

The club sent a letter to Her Majesty for her Jubilee and received a reply.

Coun Bryan Alcock read out the reply from the Queen’s lady in waiting Susan Husband.

“Her Majesty was interested to hear about this special milestone in the club’s history and was pleased to know of the activities that take place and the friendships made,” the letter states. “The Queen hopes the members have a very happy celebration and I’m to thank you for writing as you did and your kind message.”

Jennifer Alcock spoke to the group about how her mum Ivy Dunmore helped set up the Over 60s club in 1952.

“I was a small girl and my mum did a lot of work but there’s two ladies I must mention in Molly Whitehead and Stella Mason.

“All three used to make the sandwiches and cakes and I’d go into the church hall and deliver them and wash up afterwards.”

One of the organisers Ann Savage, said: “It was a lovely event.”

The club is on the look out for new members.
