Seymour-Shove’s timely strike seals Spalding United’s victory over Corby Town

Spalding United made it back-to-back wins on Saturday as Ben Seymour-Shove’s second-half strike gave them a deserved 1-0 win over Corby Town.

Seymour-Shove struck six minutes into the second half to settle a clash between two mid-table teams at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

The victory had moved the Tulips up to ninth in the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division table before Monday’s matches, with boss Brett Whaley insisting that his side could have added to their tally.

“It was a decent performance on a very difficult surface,” said Tulips chief Whaley. “We knew that we had two games in three days over Easter but went full strength for this one.

“I can’t say that it was a great spectacle, but that’s always going to be the case when you’ve got two mid-table sides towards the end of the season, sadly.

“I did feel that we wanted it more than them and could perhaps have won by a few more goals – which might have flattered us a little bit.

“Having gone to a side like Soham the week before and won while keeping a clean sheet, I wanted us to follow that up with another similar showing.

“I’m glad that result wasn’t an isolated one and we got another win on the board.

“I felt like we were pretty effective on the day and, with a bit more confidence in front of goal, we’d have won by more.”

Spalding handed a start to keeper Michael Emery, who was deputising for the unavailable Michael Duggan.

The victory was the Tulips’ first at home since February 8, with Seymour-Shove on target for the first time since New Year’s Day.

Tulips: Emery, Hart, Lynch, Marshall, Stainfield, Cartwright, Adams (Floyd 57), Broccoli, Edge, Starkie (Bucci 82), Seymour-Shove (Smith 69). Not used: Koroma, Nassunculo.

Attendance: 303.
