Dipping in for Ukraine

Several Spalding residents have helped organise and take part in a special open swimming session to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees.

Around £600 was raised for the Red Cross and Mission Poland’s Ukraine appeal as well as goods collected thanks to the efforts at Anton’s Gowt.

Aga Smith, of Spalding, was among those who helped organise the event alongside Abi Bryson-Weston, and Sam Lester from Paul Odgen’s idea.

“A number of people travelled from the local area to take part,” she said. “As the weather was absolutely fantastic, there were plenty of passers-by, families on bikes and walkers.

“We found everyone to be very supportive.

“One of the gentleman passing by mentioned that he has family in Ukraine, which was a very touching moment and he was overwhelmed that there was such a fundraising event happening.

“After the swim in the River Witham, we had a carrot and coriander soup with cake sale.

“So far, we have made about £600 by selling cakes and soup along with the raffle tickets.

“We would like to say thank you to all the businesses and individuals who provided raffle prizes.”
