It might have finished after 66 years last year, but a club for the elderly in Holbeach is still have an effect.
The Friday Club was set up in 1954 to give pensioners somewhere to go and it’s associated daily Pop In Club officially closed last September.
Now the funds built up over the years are being spent on local projects that benefit the area’s elderly.
Pat Harland (82), the chair of the committee, and husband Barry (90), have already handed money to Holbeach Hospital and The Meadows Day Centre.
Now they’ve provided money towards benches in the town near bus stops at the top of Langwith Drive and opposite the Co-op in the town centre.
Councillors Nick Worth and Tracey Carter helped with the donations and to help organise another bench be installed at Stukeley Gardens to provide respite for anyone walking into town.
Funding came from the Holbeach Town Centre Improvement fund.
Coun Worth, whose aunty Alison Hunter actually started The Friday Club, said: “It’s been such an important part of the town for the elderly people.
“Thanks to all who have been involved in it.
“I hope Pat and Barry are enjoying their time off as over the years they’ve given so much time and energy to the club and the town,” Coun Carter added. “We thank them for everything they’ve done.”
