Three brave Welland Yacht Club members contested the latest round of the Frostbite Series on Sunday despite the difficult conditions served up by storm Arwen.
Although the winds weren’t as bad as Saturday, the temperature was nearing freezing – so the first task was to break the ice off the boat covers to get rigged.
A favourable course was set for three laps (only three tacks required to complete a lap) and Mark Scourfield (Solo), Richard Holland (Laser Radial) and Eric Murray (Mirror) set off for the start of the third round of the series.
Although the reach part of the course favoured the Solo, the windy gusts allowed the others to maintain planning.
By the time the second lap had started the boats were fairly spaced out, with Scourfield in front, then Holland and Murray at the back of the fleet.
The order remained throughout and, despite some strong gusts, all three completed the course without incident or the need for the safety boat.
With Scourfield maintaining the win after handicaps applied, from Holland in second and Murray back in third, all deserved the precious low points for each place – bolstering their positions within the overall results table.
