Huge response to help family hit by fire

A fantastic reaction to an appeal for help after a blaze destroyed a family home has been applauded.

The family, including young three children, were left with nothing as the fire ripped through their Holbeach home after a chip pan overheated.

Fire crews from Holbeach, Long Sutton and Spalding were called out to the Station Road property on Sunday night around 9.30pm after a 999 call.

The Holbeach Hero’s Covid Bank immediately issued an appeal to help the family, who have been staying with relatives in the area.

Aside from a list of things which needed replacing urgently, a GoFundMe page was also set-up to help raise some money for the family to tide them over.

Within two days there had been so many donations of goods that the family had to decline any more as they don’t

have the room to store items.

The donations included a range of items from nappies to shoes and clothes for ladies.

A spokesman for the Holbeach Hero’s Covid Bank said: “We were completely overwhelmed by the response of the local community to the appeal for help. Losing all your belongings in a house fire is devastating and kind-hearted residents rallied to ensure this family can start the long process of rebuilding their lives.

“We are very grateful to everyone who has donated and we know the family has been comforted by all the offers of help.”

The fundraising page has already seen donations of almost £200 and can be found at www.gofundme.com and search for Holbeach Hero’s Covid Bank.

The bank was started by mum-of-four Sarah Phoenix to help others who were struggling with Christmas during the pandemic.

Its Facebook page now has almost 1,300 members – with 23 joining in the last week.

Help can be both offered and requested via the page which has to be joined.
