A petition against the cuts to Brylaine’s Spalding Town bus service has reached 700 signatures.
The petition, which will be handed over to local MP and Minister of State for Transport John Hayes, asks for one of the two axed early-morning services and a lunchtime run to be reinstated.
Organiser Carol Hudson said: “Brylaine says at no point have Spalding Town buses been overloaded. Well, we’ve had 29 passengers seated, six children sitting on people’s knees due to no seats and 29 people standing.
“I’m very disappointed that they have taken the decision to stop the 7.30am and 8.30am buses.”
Spalding resident and Lincolnshire county councillor Coun Angela Newton is supporting the campaign.
She said: “I was disappointed by some of (Brylaine’s) comments, particularly where it was suggested some of the senior citizens could use a later service than the 9am from Spalding Bus Station.
“I would think most wanting to use that time service is because they have medical appointments and it is not the fault of the 9am users that they are now joined by some of those who previously used the two earlier buses which have now been axed.
“The Spalding Town bus service is very well regarded in the town and I hope it is something which can continue to be run.
“I have said for some time that I think the town bus should be allowed into Spalding town centre. I feel if we could get more passengers into the heart of Spalding more people would use the buses.
“I have asked the county transportation officer to meet me to see if Lincolnshire County Council can help and I understand he is or will soon be in touch with Brylaine.”
