Barnes eyeing up experienced heads for Holbeach United after rough start

Phil Barnes admits that his Holbeach United side need an injection of experience after their winless start to the season.

The Tigers suffered a 3-0 reverse at Uhlsport UCL Premier Division north newboys Skegness Town last Wednesday, before slipping up 4-1 at Long Eaton United in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Ahead of Saturday’s league clash at Heanor Town, Barnes admits that he’s looking to add as many as three new players to his squad over the coming weeks.

Although he’s been pretty pleased by what he’s seen so far despite the results, he feels his Tigers have been a little naïve so far this season.

“We’ve not played badly so far,” said Barnes. “What I would say is that we’ve perhaps been a little naïve with our play.

“We’re pretty youthful in midfield. The lads have good ability, but I’d like to add a bit of experience in that department and within the squad.

“I’ve got two or three irons in the fire, but the truth is that nothing is imminent. I’ll probably know more on that in the coming weeks.

“I think a bit of experience will bind everything together.”

Having faced new rivals in this season’s UCL Premier Division North in both of their opening games, Holbeach face another in the shape of Heanor on Saturday.

Heanor already have three points on the board after a 2-0 home win over much-fancied Gresley Rovers in their opener at The Town Ground, but they were knocked out of the FA Cup last Saturday.

Barnes admits that it’ll be another step into the unknown for his side, but is hoping to get a first positive result of the campaign.

He added: “Obviously Heanor are new to the league and we’ve not had much of a chance to take a look at them.

“They’re an unknown quantity for us, but we’ll go there and look to be solid.

“You want to get points on the board as soon as possible and that’ll be the aim on Saturday.”

Holbeach will be without Stacey Cartwright for Saturday’s trip to Derbyshire, but hope to have right back Sam Carter available again.
