School’s mosaic is taking shape

Staff and children at a Spalding school have been getting stuck in with a huge art project that will mark the 50th anniversary of specialist schools being set up.

The Priory school has enlisted artist Fiona Gurney to create a mosaic similar to the ones she created to mark the Olympic torch passing through the area in 2012, one of which is in the Sheep Market.

The new creation is to mark the 50th anniversary of SEND (Special Education Needs and Development) initiative having been set up and has been made possible through a funding grant from the Mighty Creatives as well as generous donations including from Spalding Lions for the materials.

Lily Walmsley and Ella Hutchinson work on the mosaic watched by Miss Crane and Edward Gurney.

Dalehead Foods have agreed to help with the work needed to erect the piece.

Pupils themselves came up with ideas for what the artwork should show.

As well as the SEND logo and the school’s principles it will include trees to represent the Forest School element with each tree representing the new class names.

A ribbon across the display will represent the journey pupils go on while shining stars will mark pupils who have left and that are a shining example to current pupils.

This week the school have been getting stuck in on putting bits into the mosaic.

Fiona, of Deeping St Nicholas, said: “It’s been amazing seeing everyone getting involved. When I came in first thing the gardener was already helping out. It’s really taking shape.”

The Priory School is looking to raise £500 to completely cover the costs of the mosaic. Anyone who may be able to help is asked to contact 01775 724080.

* Fiona Gurney and her colleagues at Unique Farm Cotage Studios in Low Fulney are holding am open day on Sunday (July 11) from 10am to 3.30pm as part of the Peterborough Open Artists initiative.
