Big clean events to still go-ahead

A group of independent councillors are set to hold socially distanced litter pick events in Spalding.

Councillors Anthony Cronin, Angela Newton, Rob Gibson and Manzur Hasan will be taking on what’s being called the Great British Spring Clean events as they say South Holland District Council is not holding them this year.

Coun Newton said: “Despite South Holland District Council deciding not to do anything to support the Tidy Britain Group’s campaign, Spalding Independent councillors have decided to do litter picks.

“We continue to get reports of litter and comments that the town is in a poor state and want to show our commitment to the community.

“Because of Boris Johnson saying this week group sizes are restricted, anybody wishing to volunteer is still welcome to join us, but we may need to divide into smaller groups.”

Coun Newton said she was “sad” that the district council is not organising the events but has been told that the authority would collect the waste after the event.

She continued: “We will bring litter pickers and bags.“Volunteers should bring their own masks and gloves

The events are set to be:

  • Wednesday, September 16 at 6.15pm to 7.15pm. Monkshouse Playing field/verges alongside Monks House Lane, meet near Scout/Guide HQ.
  • Saturday, September 19 at 9.30am to 10.30am at the footbridge over the railway on Park Road.
  • Sunday, September 20 at 10am to 11am at the footbridge for Green Lane and St Johns Road.
  • Monday, September 21 at The Parkway, Aalsmeer Rise and nearby, 5.30pm to 6.30pm, meet near the Green.
